Ironing Temperatures for Iron and Ironing Board
Cotton
Cotton is a tough fabric that can handle quite a bit of heat. For cotton, you can usually set your iron to a high temperature. A good range is between 180 - 220°C (356 - 428°F). The natural fibers in cotton are quite resilient, and the heat can effectively reshape them.
Linen
Linen is another natural fabric, but it's a bit more delicate than cotton. It's best to iron linen at a temperature around 190 - 230°C (374 - 446°F). Linen tends to wrinkle easily, and the higher temperature helps to smooth out those creases. It's a good idea to iron linen while it's still slightly damp or use a steam function on your iron to prevent scorching.
Silk
Silk is a luxurious and delicate fabric. You definitely don't want to crank up the heat too high when ironing silk. A temperature between 110 - 130°C (230 - 266°F) is recommended. It's also a good practice to iron silk inside - out to protect the surface of the fabric. You can place a thin cloth, like a cotton handkerchief, between the iron and the silk to act as a buffer.
Wool
Wool is a versatile fabric, but it requires a specific ironing approach. The recommended temperature for wool is around 140 - 160°C (284 - 320°F). Wool fibers are made up of protein, and high heat can cause them to break down or felt. Always use a pressing cloth when ironing wool to prevent direct contact between the iron and the fabric.
Synthetic Fabrics (Polyester, Nylon, etc.)
Synthetic fabrics have different heat tolerances. Polyester can usually handle a temperature of about 130 - 150°C (266 - 302°F), while nylon should be ironed at a lower temperature, around 100 - 120°C (212 - 248°F).
Notes
Always start with a low temperature and gradually increase it if needed. This way, you can avoid damaging the fabric.
Test the iron on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first to make sure the temperature is right.
Use steam when possible. Steam can help relax the fibers and make it easier to remove wrinkles, especially at lower temperatures.
Keep the iron moving. Leaving the iron in one place for too long can cause scorching, even at the right temperature.
